10 Guidelines For Naming Your Baby

Baby NamesI am writing this article and listing possible baby names of girls and boys for an office friend, Marie, who is 6 months pregnant. I will make the baby names a separate category because the baby names are too many to put in one post. I will slice them up in series. So, Marie, here goes your baby names.

If you already have a name that you like, I am sure you are already picturing the name if it fits right with your baby. If the name might not feel right with your baby as you picture it, I am sure you already know how unpleasant it is to go through life with a name for a number of reasons.

I suggest you follow the 10 guidelines I made when considering a name for your baby. The 10 guidelines for baby naming considers the different factors that could affect the way a name will work for your baby in the future. The guidelines for baby naming would somehow help in making your subjective decision of selecting a name in to more objective for you. The 10 guidelines for choosing a baby name still depend on you and on your built-in bias toward the name. Some parents would go for a simple, common, and easy to spell name. However, some would prioritize uniqueness or the sound, which makes the name more complicated in terms of spelling and pronunciation. Here are the 10 guidelines that could help you decide for your baby’s name.

1. Spelling

You need to decide if you want the spelling to be easy and simple or unique but a little bit hard to spell.

2. Pronunciation

You need to weight the name on how it is pronounce. Is it easy or difficult to pronounce? Does it sound funny or weird that might trigger your baby to be bullied by his or her schoolmates in the future?

3. Gender ID

Is the name clear for a boy’s name if your child is a boy?

4. Rhythm

Try to say the name with your baby’s surname. Do they somehow blend? Does it sound appealing or unpleasant?

5. Sound

Try to say the name again louder and picture your baby associated with the name. Does it sound good?
6. Nicknames

Aside from the name, you need to think of possible nicknames that could be associated with the name you are thinking. Nicknames are sometimes trigger factors for ridicule in the future. Make sure the nicknames that could be associated with the name you are thinking for your baby would also sound pleasant and without any negative words associated with it.

7. Meaning

Most parents prioritize the meaning of the name. In most cultures, the deciding factor for a baby’s name is the meaning of the name. Does it have a positive meaning?

8. Popularity

Is the name you are thinking too popular that almost 70% of the population have it? Or is the name too old that it seems your baby was transferred from a time capsule where kings and queens are existent?

9. Uniqueness

Be careful on this one because the name could be too strange if you put more weight on uniqueness for your baby’s name.

10. Initials

Make sure the initials of the name of our baby would sound pleasant and would avoid forming negative words that could become a source of ridicule in the future.

So, let’s move forward to baby girls’ names on my next post.
